Title image with text best picks for gluten free skin care + where to find it

What’s the Deal with Gluten-Free Skin Care?

When our family first found out how common gluten is in skin care products, we had a really difficult time sorting through all the products on the market to find items that we could trust would be gluten-free.  Keep reading for the reasons why someone should switch to gluten free skin care (including if Celiacs need gluten-free skin care products), how to identify gluten in skin care, where to buy it, followed by a HUGE list of gluten free cosmetic brands that manufacture gluten-free skin care by category:

  • Soap,
  • Moisturizer & Body Lotion,
  • Anti-aging products,
  • Sunscreen,

Do I Need Gluten Free Skin Care?

People choose to eat a gluten-free diet for a multitude of reasons: Celiac Disease, allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances.  But does that mean that you should stick to gluten-free personal care items as well?

Personally, our family is gluten-free due to Celiac Disease, but we only buy gluten-free personal care items due to the risk of accidental ingestion.

While it’s intuitive that items like lip balm or chap stick would easily become ingested when licking lips or eating, other personal care items can be accidentally ingested in a multitude of ways:

  • lotion can be transferred when preparing food or eating with your hands,
  • sunscreen can enter your mouth while sweating,
  • you can even accidentally ingest your partner’s personal care items through kissing!

Others cannot tolerate topical gluten exposure due to allergy or skin sensitivity.  More recent studies have even shown that conditions such as eczema may be exasperated by gluten.

Dermatitis Herpetiformis is also known by other names such as Duhring’s disease or DH.  Most people with DH also have Celiac disease.  In DH, you experience a similar autoimmune response as you do with Celiac Disease, but it shows up on your skin as a painful rash with blisters.

If you’re someone who may need gluten-free skin care, keep reading for how to read skin care labels to identify possible sources of gluten AND for recommended gluten-free skin care products!

**Did you know there’s even gluten in toothpaste??  Click here for a gluten-free toothpaste brand list!

How do I Find Gluten in Beauty Products?

Reading skin care labels to locate gluten-containing ingredients is beyond difficult.  There are just so many complicated ingredient names that are derived from gluten containing grains.

Some of the more common ingredients used in manufacturing skin care that contain gluten are:

  • Avena sativa (this is a fancy name for oats—unless the product is specified as gluten-free, there is a high risk of it containing gluten),
  • Hydrolyzed malt extract,
  • Hydrolyzed wheat gluten,
  • Phytosphingosine extract,
  • Samino peptide complex,
  • Secale cereale (rye) seed flour,
  • Triticum vulgare (wheat) gluten (this could also be labeled as an extract, oil, or starch),
  • and many, many, more!

Beyond directly containing gluten as ingredients, many skin care products are produced on machinery that also processes gluten!

With the difficulty that comes with understanding whether there is gluten in beauty products, it is MUCH easier to stick with brands who intentionally create their items to be gluten-free.  Many of these companies even go the extra step to manufacture certified gluten-free skin care.

Keep reading to see a list of trusted gluten-free skin care brands by category and where to buy them.  I compiled this list for you by searching manufacturer websites for solid gluten-free manufacturing practices or certification and by contacting customer service directly.

Where Do You Buy Gluten-Free Skin Care?

There are many stores and boutiques that sell gluten-free products.  While your local drug store or box store may sell some products, I find it much easier to shop for gluten-free personal care products online.  Some of my favorite websites to shop for gluten-free personal care are:

  • Amazon.com –Amazon has almost everything you could ever want to find!  Just be sure to check the product images to see if it has a direct gluten-free label on the product.  If the product description on the page states “gluten-free” but you cannot find a label on the actual product, double check the manufacturer website to guarantee that the product is gluten-free.
  • Arbonne.com —  Every product from Arbonne is labeled gluten-free and many are also certified gluten-free.  Plus, all products are vegan certified.  Learn more about Arbonne here.
  • Brandless.com – If you’ve never browsed Brandless, please do!  They make it easy to search by specialty (including “gluten-free” but also lots of other things ‘free’ too) and their products are an excellent value for the price.  If you’ve never ordered from Brandless before, click this promo link to save $6 on your first order!
  • Thrive Market — Thrive Market is an online specialty retailer that also makes it easy to search by specialty.  The Thrive Market brand itself has many gluten-free skin care options and they are definitely a good deal, but the true perk of Thrive Market over Brandless is that you can purchase name brands.  Thrive Market is often cheaper than Amazon prices and always offers promotions and with each qualifying order you receive free samples of products.  Click here for a free 30-day trial and $20 off your order from Thrive Market.

Why Gluten-Free Makeup?

Whether or not you need gluten-free makeup depends on your initial reason for going gluten-free.  Are you gluten-free due to allergies, Celiac Disease, a sensitivity, an intolerance?

While many people have a topical or skin reaction to gluten (due to eczema, an allergy, or dermatitis herpetiformis), others only have a reaction to gluten when it is ingested.

However, even if you do not react topically to gluten but do have a reaction to gluten ingestion, you may want to seriously consider switching all of your makeup, cosmetics, and personal care items to gluten-free due to the risk of accidental ingestion.

It’s intuitive that makeup items like lipstick could easily be ingested (albeit in small amounts), but other makeup can be ingested through sweating or not washing your hands after applying.

In my personal opinion, if you have Celiac Disease, you should seriously consider switching all your cosmetics and personal care items to gluten-free.

Why Clean Makeup?

In addition to causing skin irritation, many common cosmetic ingredients are carcinogenic, endocrine disruptors, and even are shown to cause cancer.  Your skin is an organ and absorbs the personal care and makeup products you use and some of these toxic components can enter your bloodstream.  While Europe has banned over 1,000 ingredients from cosmetics, the United States has only banned 11.

In addition to wanting my makeup to be free to toxins, I also look for my makeup to be cruelty-free (not tested on animals) and vegan (not containing any animal by-products).

Note: If you want to know more about Clean Beauty, I highly recommend my friend Jenny’s website.

4 Makeup Products to Be Wary of if You’re Gluten-Free

Being gluten-free inevitably involves making changes to your diet, but it affects other parts of life too. It’s not always something you think of as affecting your makeup choices, for example, but it does. If you are keen to go totally gluten-free, or suffer from severe gluten intolerance or Celiac Disease, gluten-free makeup products can have a positive impact on your immune system and overall health.

Keep reading for 4 make up products you should be wary of using if you’re gluten-free.

This post is a collaboration post by The Helpful GF by Clayton Martin. My full disclosure isn’t that interesting, but you can find it here.

1. Lipstick

Lipstick possesses perhaps the biggest problem for those who want (or need) to introduce gluten-free cosmetics into their life. This is because it is easily ingested by accident when you eat, drink or lick your lips, if you are sensitive to gluten, or allergic, you may find yourself experiencing uncomfortable or even dangerous symptoms.

Lipsticks often contain gluten substances to act as stabilizers for the formula, or to nourish the lips. Lip balms are just as notorious for having gluten ingredients, usually for moisturizing purposes, such as wheat germ or oat oil.

The good news is there are plenty of great brands that are either totally gluten-free or have gluten-free product lines of lipsticks, balms and glosses – so you don’t have to worry about missing out.

2. Moisturizer and Body Lotion

Many gluten products have moisturising properties, so it’s no surprise you often find them in body lotions, hand creams and face moisturisers. Wheat germ oil and colloidal oatmeal are the two main ingredients you’ll see listed front and centre, as they are well known for their moisturising effects. You might also see barley extract or rye flour in face creams, as both possess antioxidant and anti-aging properties (a key factor in many facial skin care products).

Skincare is where you’re most likely to find gluten ingredients, so be sure to read the labels carefully and consider brushing up on some of the more scientific names.

3. Mascara

To nourish and lengthen lashes, many mascaras contain vitamin E. Vitamin E is normally extracted from almonds, which are gluten-free – however, it can also be derived from wheat germ.

Unfortunately, how the vitamin E in the product is sourced is often not stated, making it difficult to determine if it’s truly gluten-free. Look for almond oil extract instead of just vitamin E if you’re after a more gentle mascara formula.

4. Foundation

Similar to skincare, moisturising or anti-aging based foundations may contain gluten ingredients that could prove potentially harmful to you. As your foundation is applied very close to the mouth, there is also a small risk of ingesting it. Be sure to look for a gluten-free foundation to reduce the risk of accidental ingestion or dermatological reactions such as rashes and hives.

Fortunately, there’s plenty of information around about which products might commonly contain gluten – as well as companies that manufacture gluten-free makeup. Part of this may be due to the rise of more inclusive and cruelty-free makeup brands, Groupon claims, for example, that 70% of people worldwide now want to end animal testing for products and this leads to better labeling overall.

More and more people are becoming actively aware of the ingredients that enter their bodies, so you’re not alone.

YOUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL OILS: ARE THEY GLUTEN-FREE?

6 / 6 / 184 / 20 / 20

I am a Young Living Independent Distributor.  However, this is an honest review of my personal experience with Young Living.  If you <3 a brand other than Young Living—cool!  This is just my personal experience with Young Living.

Young Living Essential Oils: Are They Gluten-Free?

My sister-in-law was the first person to tell me about essential oils.  I’d never really thought anything about them before (honestly, I might not have even known they’d existed!)  She began to tell me about what she’d ordered from Young Living and how to use it.  I quickly became excited to see what this ‘oil thing’ was all about and if it would be beneficial to my family’s gluten-free lifestyle.

SCROLL DOWN FOR ALL THE INFORMATION ON WHETHER YOUNG LIVING IS GLUTEN-FREE.

My first question about Young Living was:  Are they a gluten-free company?  After a couple conversations with United States customer service, I learned the following:  All essential oils singles, essential oil blends, and essential oil roll-ons in the US are gluten-free.  Whoo hoo!

Next I was curious how to use them in a way that would be beneficial to my health.  My sister-in-law gave me a couple great resources.

The first was the Essential Oils Pocket Reference.  This reference book contains everything from information about each oil and oil blends, as well as how to use them.  Plus, you can search the book by issue to see what oil is recommended for use.

Check out the Essential Oil Pocket Reference here for more information.

The second resource I used is the book Gentle Babies: Essential Oils and Natural Remedies for Pregnancy, Childbirth, Infants and Young Children. This book contains a bunch of information specifically on how to use Essential Oils safely during pregnancy and on children. It’s really great if you want natural remedies for your home.

Check out Gentle Babies here for more information.

I  asked a couple more questions about oils and learned a some things about Young Living’s quality and production that made me order Young Living’s oils right away.

Keep reading to learn more about Young Living’s commitment to quality.

Are you ready to start oiling?  Click through to this post to learn more about how to get started using essential oils.

Quality

Unlike the aroma-grade or fragrance-grade oils you can buy at the store, Young Living’s pure essential oils only contain the essential oils.  While grocery store oils are cheaper, they usually contain artificial fillers or synthetics.  This is not the case with Young Living’s oils (this is also why Young Living’s oils do not have expiration dates—pure essential oils do not expire)!

young living essential oils gluten-free pin 2

This makes Young Living’s oils safer than other oils whether you are applying oils topically, diffusing them in the air, or ingesting them (keep reading to learn about Young Living’s Vitality line).  You can also apply essential oils to specifically created jewelry to incorporate the oils into your daily routine!

If an oil needs to be diluted (due to it being too thick or something like that), Young Living will dilute it with coconut or another natural oil.  In this case, the oil will clearly be labeled as such in the ingredients.

One other bonus of choosing Young Living is that their Vitality line of essential oils are FDA approved for ingestion.  I haven’t seen any other pure essential oils that are cleared by the FDA.

Lastly, Young Living has a greater selection of pure essential oils than any other oil company!  They currently have around 200 essential oil singles, blends, and roll-ons—all gluten-free!

Keep reading to learn about Young Living’s Seed to Seal commitment.

Seed to Seal

Young Living is the only essential oils company which controls the production process from the time the plant is a seed, to when the bottle is sealed and sold (get it?  seed to seal!).  This means that the company controls every. single. part. of. production.

Click the image to make it full-sized!

Young Living’s oils are sourced from their own farms, partner farms, or farms that meet Young Living’s strict standards by becoming Seed to Seal Certified.  This means that the suppliers adhere to Young Living’s principles and guidelines.  They even undergo audits to ensure it!  Young Living also works with third-party experts who evaluate their process to ensure that all products used meet standards for ethical sourcing.

In addition, Young Living is so transparent about their process that anyone can actually go visit Young Living’s farms and help harvest or distill oils.

What about their Other Products?

Young Living provides other products including skin care, cosmetics, vitamins, and cleaning supplies.  While I believe the products are excellent quality (and personally use a lot of them), these are not all gluten-free.  Furthermore, Young Living does not have a standing list of which of these products are and are not gluten-free.  This honestly is one of the things that does disappoint me about Young Living.  So, what do you do?

If there is a Young Living Product outside of their oils that you want to try, take a look at the ingredients list!  Many of their products clearly state WHEAT or BARLEY on their label.  So, obviously, for those of us that are gluten-free, that’s a no-go!

When it comes to nutrition products, the ones that contain gluten or ingredients derived from wheat, barley, etc. do state “contains gluten.”  Some other food and nutrition products actually state “gluten-free” (such as the gluten-free pancake mix!), so these products do meet FDA gluten-free standards for labeling.

If I’m thinking about trying a new product, and the product does not obviously contain gluten, I always contact customer service to double check.  Young Living’s Customer Service is AWESOME!  Contact them by phone at 1-800-371-3515, email at productsupport@youngliving.com, or even the Live Chat feature on their website.  Yes, this is an extra step, but I’ve always found them to be so helpful!

One of the product lines that I regularly order from Young Living is their Savvy Minerals line.  As of the time of this post, the whole Savvy Minerals line is gluten-free with the exception of the lipstick (actually, the lipstick might be, but they warned me that gluten considerations for the lipstick are under review).  Honestly, it’s difficult to find gluten-free make up, and I LOVE this make-up!  And it’s totally comparable to boutique make-up.

How do you Buy Young Living?

Currently, the only place to buy Young Living is through an independent distributor (like me) on the Young Living Website.  Yes, if you google it you’ll find Young Living products for sale on Amazon.  But Young Living does not supply them there!  (Translation: there is no way to authenticate that what’s in the bottle is Young Living’s product—be warned!)

5 Reasons Why Arbonne is a Great Gluten-Free Company

5 / 30 / 184 / 20 / 20
5 Reasons to use Arbonne if you're gluten-free title image with make up

Although I’ve been exploring the world of gluten-free products for over 7 years (read more about my family’s gluten-free journey here!), it wasn’t until after Tyler and I were married that I realized non-food products could also contain gluten.  The thought never popped into my head that my skin care, cosmetics, or personal care products could contaminate him with gluten!  I began reading labels of my cosmetics and my skin care products.  Googling the internet.  Contacting customer service representatives.  Wow. I thought food labeling was difficult to understand–the world of cosmetics is another issue entirely!

In 2017, my best friend had an Arbonne party.  I said I’d watch the presentation to support her—and wow!  I got about 5 minutes into it and I was already thumbing through the catalog and making a wish list!  Keep reading for the 5 things that made me fall in love with Arbonne!

1. Arbonne’s products are certified gluten free through the Gluten-Free Certification Organization

Gluten-free certification was the biggest deal for me! This means that Arbonne goes one step beyond the current FDA requirements for gluten-free labeling.  Learn more about gluten-free labeling and the Gluten Free Certification organization here.  This gives me an extra level of comfort—especially when using their nutritional line!

2. Arbonne Essentials® Protein Shakes are also certified by GI Labs

Did you know that 6% of Type 1 Diabetics also have Celiac disease?  Actually, it is common practice for Endocrinologists to test their patients for Celiac disease.  Click here to learn more about the connection between Celiac and Diabetes.   My husband has both Celiac and Type 1.  We use Arbonne’s chocolate protein daily in our household.  It’s awesome to know that GI Labs certifies these products.

3. Arbonne has a “not-allowed list.”

The United States has banned 10-20 ingredients from use in cosmetics that the FDA considers harmful. But did you know that the European Union has banned over 1,400?  (uh…. I dunno about you, but that’s a surprising difference)  Arbonne has actually gone a step further than that and has a big list of 2,000 ingredients that they won’t use in any of their products!  What are these ingredients?  They’re ingredients banned in the United States, the other countries Arbonne is sold in, or ingredients that these countries are even considering banning through legislation.  See all 2,000 not-allowed ingredients here.

4. Arbonne is certified vegan and cruelty free.

Maybe you’re saying “so what? I’m not vegan, why do I care?”  In all transparency, that’s what I first thought too.  Certified vegan means that all the products are independently certified to contain absolutely no animal products are by-products.  Basically, Arbonne doesn’t use ingredients such as animal rennet.  Rendering plants produce animal rennet by boiling down parts from animal carcasses until certain enzymes are extracted.  Where do they get animal carcasses?  They primarily come from slaughter houses, but many rendering plants also take road kill, euthanized animals and more.  I’m not fear mongering here…this is just how this process works.  Rennet is used in many products, but the cosmetics/personal care industry uses them the most.

Arbonne is cruelty free because they do not test on animals.  Animal testing always gave me these weird mental images like someone in a lab coat putting blush on a rat.  However, there is a darker side to animal testing and many countries have banned the practice.

5. There are so many other reasons that Arbonne is awesome—if I went into it all my post would completely overflow!

So, I’ll just list a couple here:  Kosher Certified, Non-GMO Project Verified, BSCG Certified Drug-Free, and their sport performance nutritional products are banned substance tested by Informed-Sport.

Those are just 5 reasons I love Arbonne as a company.

Personally, I love that if I’m looking for a gluten-free skincare or make up product I can just go online and order something from Arbonne and know it’s safe for me.  It’s so easy!

Plus, I love saving $$$ and when I was a customer I saved at least 20-40% AND earned free products as a Preferred Client.  Now that I’m an Independent Consultant I frequently save 50% or more on orders AND earn free products!

Do you want to save $$ too?  Sign up as a Preferred Client here or contact me and I’ll walk you through it!

I’ve received free mascara , make up primer, face serum, fizz sticks for mid-day energy boosts, and more!

Hi! I’m Sharon from Upstate New York. When I married my husband (diagnosed with Celiac in 1997) in 2012, I quickly learned that being gluten-free was more complicated than giving up bread. I’m a church-planting pastor’s wife and a working mom just trying to make it all work! Welcome to my space. ♥
