Planning a wedding in itself is stressful and adding a restriction can add more to the stress. However, it is better to plan if you want to ensure that all your guests feel included and enjoy the celebration without worrying about dietary restrictions. If you or your partner follow a gluten-free diet (as was the case when we got married), you might want to make an entire gluten-free wedding. After all, it's your special day, and you deserve to fully enjoy the festivities. You don't want to feel left out while your guests indulge in a buffet filled with gluten-containing options.

Keep reading for some key strategies to help you plan a stress-free gluten-free wedding.

🚫🌾 Decide on the Gluten-Free Policy

The first step is to determine whether your wedding will be completely gluten-free or if you will allow some gluten-containing options for guests who do not have dietary restrictions. This decision will influence your catering choices, menu planning, and communication with vendors. If you choose a fully gluten-free wedding, it’s essential to communicate clearly with all vendors.

📞 Communicate with Your Venue and Caterer

Many venues require you to employ in-house caterers or select from a predetermined list of vendors. Those that do frequently have predefined menus with minimal customization possibilities. If you are having a gluten-free wedding because of allergies, it is better to understand allergy protocols from sourcing and cooking to serving.

It is essential to collaborate with the venue regarding catering options to make it memorable and stress-free. For instance, larger urban venues like those in New York typically have extensive in-house catering facilities that can accommodate various dietary needs. In contrast, venues in remote locations like Joshua Tree, known for their stunning natural scenery, may offer limited in-house catering options. Therefore, it is advisable to either work with the venue to identify a reliable external catering service or seek approval to bring in pre-prepared meals that meet safety standards.

Destination weddings require the same preparation as any restaurant. Ask all the usual questions and make sure you have safe food options. A gluten-free diet takes work and some planning, especially in the beginning, as you are starting with a new way of eating.

If you are going for a location that lets you bring in your own caterer, you will be in complete control over the food that’s served at your gluten-free wedding.

Another option to consider is hiring one or more food trucks. This allows you to choose a vendor who knows how to cater to gluten-free diets, and you may even sample the cuisine before contacting them.

Ensure that your venue staff and caterers understand your gluten-free requirements. For instance, if you're in Chicago, renowned for its diverse food scene, look for caterers who specialize in gluten-free options. Discuss cross-contamination protocols to keep gluten-containing foods separate from gluten-free options.

When selecting a caterer, it’s important to choose someone who has experience catering for gluten-free diets. An experienced caterer will be able to advise you on the best options for your guests. They will also give more gluten-free options to add to your menu that everyone can enjoy.

📝 Working on the Menu

Planning a gluten-free wedding can be rewarding and doesn't have to be daunting. With careful planning and creative menu choices, you can create a memorable and delicious celebration for all your guests. You can also incorporate ethnic cuisine, such as Thai, Vietnamese, or Mexican, which often feature naturally gluten-free dishes.

While weddings can be costly, catering is often a significant expense. However, embracing a gluten-free menu can often lead to cost-effective options.

Focus on naturally gluten-free ingredients like fresh produce, lean proteins, wholesome grains, fresh seafood, grilled vegetables, rice, and potatoes. These options are not only delicious but also often more budget-friendly.

Appetizers

Start with a selection of naturally gluten-free appetizers, such as charcuterie boards with gluten-free crackers, vibrant vegetable platters, and fresh fruit displays. Here are some of the options you can consider:

  • baked spinach artichoke dip out of oven with tortilla chips on marble counter

Main Courses:

You can offer a variety of main course options, including grilled meats, fresh seafood, and hearty salads without croutons or glutinous dressings. For example, you can consider incorporating themed stations like build-your-own tacos or a vibrant stir-fry bar with gluten-free noodles. Here are some items you might want to consider:

Desserts

Desserts are the highlight of an evening like a wedding. Serve your guests with delicious gluten-free desserts. You can also explore options in your neighborhood that provide gluten-free cake. On the contrary, you can also consider creative alternatives to traditional wedding cakes, such as a selection of elegant gluten-free cupcakes or a decadent dessert buffet. Check out these options:

✨ Bonus Tips

Label Everything Clearly

Label all food items clearly at the buffet or serving stations to make it easy for everyone. This will help guests identify which dishes are safe for them to consume without having to ask, reducing the risk of accidental gluten exposure and preventing cross-contamination.

If having both allergen-free and allergen containing foods, consider setting up a separate table for the allergen free foods! This makes it easier to accommodate special dietary needs.

Consider Special Meals for the Couple

If only you and your partner are gluten-free, you can arrange for special gluten-free meals prepared separately from the main catering service to avoid cross-contamination. This could be a meal made by a trusted friend or ordered from your favorite gluten-free restaurant. This way you can enjoy gluten-free options for yourselves while also keeping non-restrictive delicacies for your guests.

Staying in Budget

Here’s the catch, choosing naturally gluten-free items will not necessarily increase your cost. Some gluten-free choices, such as a gluten-free dessert bar over a standard wedding cake, could even save you money.

While specialized caterers might be expensive, you can also opt for a hybrid option to keep costs down. Have a more affordable caterer prepare the meals for your guests and hire a dedicated gluten-free caterer or restaurant for the gluten-free meals.

At my wedding we had a small gluten-free cake just for us and the few other guests who required it, and ordered grocery store sheet cakes that were cut in the back for everyone else. This ended up being significantly cheaper than a traditional wedding cake to feed everyone at the wedding.

Educate Your Guests

Before the wedding, consider sending out information about allergen-free options or your gluten-free menu and what guests can expect. This will help set expectations and allow those with dietary restrictions to feel more comfortable attending.

🎉 Wrapping it Up

A gluten-free wedding doesn't have to compromise on taste or elegance. Whether you need to go gluten-free for medical reasons or personal preference, it's important to approach it thoughtfully. Focus on naturally gluten-free whole foods, stay mindful of hidden gluten sources, and limit processed gluten-free options.

By taking these steps, you can create a beautiful and inclusive gluten-free wedding that allows all your guests to enjoy the celebration without worry. Remember to focus on delicious food options that everyone will love while ensuring that those with dietary restrictions feel welcomed and cared for on your special day. With thoughtful planning and consideration of local resources, you can achieve a memorable day that celebrates love and inclusivity without compromising on taste or safety.
