The Main Halo Top Ice Cream Ingredients
Halo Top ice cream is unique because it offers a lower calorie option to traditional ice cream. Where traditional ice cream is made with cream, Halo Top uses skim milk, and rather than using sugar, Halo Top is sweetened with erythritol or stevia extract.
While each flavor has its own unique ingredients, in general most of the Halo Top products are made with skim milk, erythritol, eggs, prebiotic fiber, cream, organic cane sugar, vegetable glycerin, and organic stevia leaf extract.
Traditional ice cream is naturally a gluten free product because of its basic ingredients. Cream or milk and sugar are both gluten free, and by default so is ice cream.
Where people with gluten allergies have to be careful is in any sort of flavored ice cream. If the flavorings or additives used to make a unique flavor of ice cream contain gluten, then the ice cream is no longer safe for consumption.
Additionally, celiacs have to be aware of and look out for the possibility of cross contamination. If the facility or tools used to make gluten free ice cream have been used to make gluten containing ice cream, there is a risk of cross contact.
Cross contact is a really important part of gluten free living. If you haven’t already, check out this super helpful post about preventing cross contact in the kitchen.
This possibility of cross contact is especially relevant in the case of Halo Top ice cream because many of their products appear to be gluten free, but are not labeled or certified that way. It is possible that the potential of cross contact is the reason for that.
