How can you tell if chips are gluten free?
Are you wondering: are potato chips gluten free? When it comes to potato chips, like with any other food, the best way to tell if they are gluten free is with certification and labeling.
In order for something to be labeled gluten free, it has to meet certain criteria set forth by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Some brands take their gluten free claim one step further with gluten free certification. This means the product has been third-party verified to be gluten free.
If labeling and certification sounds confusing, it’s because it is. To help make it more simple, I’ve put together this handy guide. Take a look and bookmark this page for future reference - you’ll use it over and over again.
Another way you can tell if a product is gluten free is by reading the labels. Gluten is a protein that is found in various types of grains like wheat, rye, spelt and barley.
Since potatoes do not contain grains, they are naturally gluten free. But not all potato chips will be gluten free.
The reason you still need to carefully read the labels is because of the ingredients that can be added to potato chips. Things like the type of seasoning used can contain gluten.
One other reason you want to choose crisps that are labeled or certified gluten free is because of the possibility of cross contact. This is an important concept for anyone who follows a gluten free diet, so take a minute to read more about it here.
While a brand’s potato chips may be gluten free, if they are made in a facility that also makes gluten containing foods there is a risk of cross contact.
