Are there gluten free options at Burger King?
The gluten free options at Burger King are extremely limited if you have a gluten allergy or intolerance. There are also additional concerns about trying to eat gluten free at Burger King that are important to consider.
The biggest consideration about eating gluten free at Burger King is that their allergen menu only includes wheat, rather than gluten specifically. While wheat is one of the main sources of gluten, gluten is also commonly found in rye and barley.
Wheat free does not mean gluten free. By opting to only include ingredients that contain wheat it would be impossible to know if any particular menu item contains gluten or not.
This challenge is further complicated because the allergen list includes the complete menu item rather than the individual ingredients. Because the menu item is listed as containing wheat, you can’t tell if any part of the item, such as an egg or burger patty, is gluten free or not.
Another problem with eating at Burger King is that they use a shared deep fryer. So even menu items that are listed as wheat free end up being subject to cross contact.

Wondering about fries and oatmeal? While neither contains wheat, we left them off this list so we could discuss them in detail in their own sections below. Scroll down to find them!
Are Burger King’s Fries Gluten Free?
French fries are listed on the Burger King allergen guide as wheat free, but unfortunately they are not gluten free. That’s because Burger King uses a shared deep fryer for all of their frying.
Using a shared fryer creates a significant risk of gluten cross contact. So even though the french fries start out wheat free, once they’re cooked they are not safe for gluten free consumption.
Is Burger King’s Oatmeal Gluten-Free?
While Oatmeal shows as wheat free on the Burger King allergens list, there is no evidence that they are using gluten free oats. Oats are kind of tricky for gluten free living because they are naturally gluten free, but they have a high risk of cross contact with other grains during processing.
Since this is the case, and Burger King hasn’t specifically stated that they’re using gluten free oats there’s no way to be sure the oatmeal is gluten free. For that reason we have omitted oatmeal from the list.
Should you eat at Burger King if you have celiac disease?
Honestly, no! I would not recommend eating at Burger King if you have celiac disease. Between their vague allergen menu and high likelihood of cross contact it’s simply too risky.
If you find yourself having to eat at a Burger King, stick to the safest items like beverages.
There are plenty of other gluten free fast food options that are much safer. Some of my favorites are Chipotle, and Chick-Fil-A.
