This Easy Taco Tater Tot Casserole has been a total game-changer in my dinner rotation. It’s the perfect combination of cheesy, savory, and comforting. Plus, it’s gluten-free and ridiculously simple to throw together - my favorite parts of any recipe.

👩‍🍳 Instructions for Taco Tater Tot Casserole Recipe

Making family-friendly taco casserole is so easy!

A white casserole dish is covered with a single layer of frozen tater tots.

Step 1: Add tater tots to a greased casserole dish.

A pan is filled with cooked ground beef that is topped with salsa. A wooden spoon is resting on the side of the pan.

Step 2. Brown the ground beef and drain. Then mix in taco seasoning, water and salsa.

Step 3: Remove half of the tots in the pan leaving a single layer and top with meat.

Step 4: Top with half of the cheese. Then layer with the remaining tots and cheese.

Step 5: Bake at 425 until cheese is bubbly and tots are cooked through.

Hint: using lean ground beef keeps the dish more balanced. If you are using regular ground meat, drain and rinse it before adding to the casserole dish.

📖 Substitutions and Variations

Not only is this hotdish super quick to make, it’s also really simple to modify the ingredients to suit your diet.

  • 🌮Ground Meat - any ground meat, like turkey, will work in this dish
  • 🥛Dairy Free - use dairy-free cheese to make the casserole dairy free
  • 🥗Balanced Meal - serve with a side salad or other vegetable side for a balanced meal

🍽️ Storage

Tater tot taco casserole stores well in both the fridge and freezer. Cover the dish well with tin foil, plastic wrap or in an airtight container. It will keep well in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or in the freezer for 2-3 months.

⭐ Top tip

If you prefer your tater tots crispy, briefly cook them while you assemble the rest of the dish. It will help them retain their crispiness.

Ingredients
  

  • 32 oz frozen tater tots gluten free
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 oz taco seasoning gluten free
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 2 cups shredded cheese

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 425.
  • Lightly spray baking dish with non-stick spray and add all the tater tots to the pan. Bake for ten minutes before removing from the oven and setting aside.
  • Meanwhile, brown your ground beef over medium heat and drain the fat.
  • Add in taco seasoning, ⅓ cup water and 1 cup of salsa, mixing until well combined.
  • Remove half the tots from the pan, leaving one row to cover the bottom of the pan.
  • Top the tots with the meat mixture, followed by half of the cheese.
  • Add the rest of the tots to the top and top with the remaining cup of cheese.
  • Cook for 20-25 minutes until cheese is bubbly and tots are cooked through.
