What Is Salsa?
Salsa is a popular sauce or what some may call dip that is traditionally used with a variety of Mexican foods.
Usually, salsa is made up of tomatoes, peppers, and onions with a variety of spices and is enjoyed with tortilla chips, tacos, and other Mexican foods.
Is Salsa Gluten-Free?
Salsa is typically gluten-free as a traditional recipe as it does not contain any gluten-containing ingredient. However, this doesn’t mean that all salsas are safe as ingredients could come into contact with gluten during processing.
Gluten is a protein found in various different grains, including wheat, rye, barley, or oats if they weren’t grown separately from gluten-containing grains. You might see these ingredients on the ingredients list of the nutrient label instead of the word ‘gluten’ itself.
According to the FDA, a product can only be labeled as gluten-free in the United States if it contains less than 20 ppm of gluten, so you will want to watch for cross-contact during processing.
Is Salsa Verde Gluten-Free?
Just like regular salsa, salsa verde is usually gluten-free. You will however want to check out the labels just to be sure.
Does Store-Bought Salsa Have Gluten?
Most jarred salsa that you buy from stores is gluten-free, however, there may be contact with gluten during the processing so you will want to check labels before purchasing.
Be sure to keep reading to see the top store-bought brands to buy.
Is Restaurant Salsa Gluten-Free?
When eating out at restaurants remember to ask questions about how food is handled and prepared.
Here are some great questions you could ask when eating out:
- What kinds of accommodations are you able to make for individuals with food allergies?
- How do you prevent cross-contamination?
- Do you have any dedicated prep stations/fryers/ovens for gluten-free dishes? (While this is not an open-ended question, this can help you see how much they really are able to protect against cross-contact)
Is Salsa Vegan?
Yes, most salsa is vegan as it does not contain any dairy ingredients.
Are Chips & Salsa Gluten-Free?
If you are eating tortilla chips with salsa then most of the time they will be gluten-free.
As mentioned above, just like salsa there is a chance that tortilla chips may come in contact with gluten ingredients during processing--especially when made in a restaurant as they may be fried in a fryer that also fries gluten products--so you will want to check the labels and/or ask questions.
