Is there gluten in macaroni and cheese?
Yes, there is gluten in traditional macaroni and cheese.
Macaroni and cheese has 2 parts - the macaroni and the cheese. While the cheese sauce is often gluten free, traditional macaroni is not.
Macaroni, or any pasta for that matter, is traditionally made with wheat flour. Wheat is one of the common sources of gluten and subsequently anything made with wheat flour contains gluten.
In order for mac and cheese to be gluten free, both the macaroni and the cheese sauce have to be free of gluten. The only way to know for sure if a product is safe for consumption is to review the ingredients lists and look for gluten free labeling or certification.
It’s important to keep in mind that even homemade mac and cheese can pose a gluten risk depending on the ingredients. For example, although it’s rare, pre-shredded cheese which is a common ingredient in recipes for macaroni and cheese can be a hidden source of gluten. It may contain gluten in the form of wheat starch, which is used to keep the cheese shreds from sticking together. Uncommonly, modified food starch may also contain gluten, although in the United States it would need to be clearly stated on the food label if the modified food starch was sourced from wheat. If not designated, it is sourced from corn or potato.
The good news is that even though traditional macaroni and cheese contains gluten, it is a dish that can easily be modified to be gluten free.
Is boxed mac and cheese gluten-free?
Boxed mac and cheese can be gluten free, as long as you choose a gluten free brand! In gluten free boxed macaroni and cheese the pasta is made from a gluten free flour and the cheese sauce doesn’t have any gluten containing ingredients.

The Thrive Market brand of gluten free mac and cheese is my favorite brand for affordability. You may notice that this brand isn’t certified gluten free and is made on equipment that processes wheat, so I reached out to the company to learn more.
According to Thrive Market customer service, “strict allergen protocols are in place and the manufacturing lines are cleaned between products. Inspections are conducted between product changeovers to verify the manufacturing systems are clean.”
As long as you’re comfortable with their manufacturing processes, this is a great (and affordable) gluten free mac and cheese option.
