Relish is best known for its starring role as a condiment on hotdogs and hamburgers. We typically think of relish as the pickled cucumber variety like pickle, dill, or sweet relish but relish can actually be made of many varieties of pickled vegetables, fruit or herbs. Whichever type of relish you love, you’re probably wondering: is relish gluten free?
Quick Answer:
Relish is generally considered to be gluten-free because the traditional ingredients do not contain gluten.
However, it is important to check the label or recipe of the specific relish you are using, as some brands or homemade recipes may include additional ingredients that could contain gluten.

Is sweet relish gluten free?
Sweet relish can be gluten free, but that doesn’t guarantee that every brand is. The ingredients used to make sweet relish are traditionally gluten free, however it’s important to remember that additional ingredients added to a specific recipe may contain gluten.
For instance, some common gluten-containing ingredients added to spices, sauces, and condiments include wheat starch, wheat flour, or hydrolyzed wheat protein. Since gluten is commonly found in wheat, it is possible that some brands of relish do contain gluten.
When shopping for relish or any other food product, the best defense you can give yourself is to understand how gluten free labeling and certification work.
Always consult the packaging and ingredients list to confirm whether the brand you’re choosing is definitely gluten free.

What is sweet pickle relish made of?
Sweet relish is made with traditional relish ingredients including vegetables, vinegar and sugar. What makes sweet pickle relish distinct, is that it contains a high amount of sugar which gives it that uniquely sweet flavor.
The recipe for sweet pickle relish can be modified by using onion, vinegar, celery seeds or mustard seeds. The amount of sugar added will also change how sweet the relish is.
Is dill relish gluten free?
Dill relish is different from other relishes because it is made with dill seed and/or fresh dill. Unlike sweet relish, dill relish has a sour, tangy and slightly spicy taste.
Since dill relish contains the same basic relish ingredients, and dill is also typically gluten free, dill relish can be gluten free. It is, however, still important to check the label.
In addition to understanding gluten free labeling and certification, which we talked about earlier, understanding cross contact is also very important.
Even though a product may not be made with any gluten containing ingredients, there is still the possibility of cross contact occurring in manufacturing facilities that do not prioritize gluten free production.
Choosing a brand that is certified gluten free is always the best option, as the product has been third party tested and verified.
