Is Mayo Gluten-Free?

Yes, most mayonnaise is gluten-free.

Mayo is made from eggs, oils, vinegar, and lemon, so you will want to watch out for vinegar. Some brands may use vinegar that has malt which is derived from barley. Some mayonnaise brands may also use stabilizers. Stabilizers are emulsifiers that keep it from separating and are sometimes derived from gluten.

Gluten is a protein found in various different grains, including wheat, rye, barley, or oats if they weren’t grown separately from gluten-containing grains. You might see these ingredients on the ingredients list of the nutrient label instead of the word ‘gluten’ itself.

According to the FDA, a product can only be labeled as gluten-free in the United States if it contains less than 20 mg of gluten per kilogram, you will want to watch for cross-contact during processing.

Is Aioli Gluten-Free?

Aioli is similar to mayo, though Aioli is made from garlic and olive oil while mayo is made from egg and oil. Just like Mayonnaise, you will want to check ingredients as some flavors may contain gluten.

Is Mayonnaise Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free?

Traditional mayonnaise should be gluten-free and dairy-free.

There are no milk or milk-based products included in mayo, however, if you choose to buy eggless mayo you will want to check their ingredients as they may contain milk.

Also as mentioned above you will also want to watch out for vinegar and stabilizers used in mayonnaise that may contain ingredients derived from barley and wheat.

Is Vegan Mayonnaise Gluten-Free?

Most store-bought and homemade vegan mayo are gluten-free, however, you will want to check labels and ingredients to ensure it does not contain gluten.

How to Prevent Cross Contact for Mayonnaise

If you live in a household where people eat gluten, cross contact is a major concern. Even the smallest amount of gluten can have serious effects on someone with celiac disease.

Avoiding cross contact is especially important when it comes to ingredients that you spread on bread like mayo.  If someone spreads mayo on gluten bread and sticks the knife back into the jar, it transfers small crumbs of gluten bread into the jar.

This is not safe for someone with Celiac disease, wheat allergy, or a severe intolerance.

When it comes specifically to mayo, I really like using mayo from a squeeze bottle.  This can help be sure that no crumbs enter the mayo container as you squeeze it onto your bread and then spread it without a knife ever entering your container.

If you’re using a jar, get a ‘dedicated gluten free’ bottle of your favorite brand and ensure your jar is clearly marked with a permanent marker in big, bold letters.

If you prefer, you can use a gluten free label that stands out like these labels. Having labels on hand makes it really easy if you have several products in your kitchen that need to be separated to avoid cross contact.

Refrigerator baskets or organizers like these are another good way to keep your gluten free products separate from the other household ingredients. This allows you to dedicate an entire section of your fridge to your gluten free products.
