What is Broth Made Of?
Broth is generally made of water, meat and vegetables. It can also contain a variety of spices.
Broth is made by simmering all of the ingredients together. The longer they simmer, the stronger and more flavorful the broth gets.
What Makes Stock Different Than Broth?
Stock and broth are similar and are often used interchangeably when cooking. What makes them different is what they’re made from.
Traditionally stock is made from bones, while broth is made from meat or vegetables. Stock tends to be thicker and broth is usually thinner but more flavorful.
Is Store Bought Broth Gluten Free?
Store bought broth is more likely to contain gluten than homemade broth. One reason for that is that oftentimes producers add yeast extract. Yeast extract can sometimes contain gluten, depending on which one is being used.
It’s important to have a good idea of which yeasts are safe and which ones are not, so you can choose the right broth for your gluten free diet.
Check out this blog post on ‘Is yeast gluten free?’ to learn more.
The other thing that’s important to consider with store bought broth is cross contact. Cross contact occurs when gluten free products come into contact with kitchen tools that have been used with gluten containing ingredients.
When this happens, the food that started out gluten free can become unsafe to eat. These 4 Steps to Prevent Gluten Cross Contact in the Kitchen are helpful. Check them out and pin the article for easy reference later.
If you decide to make your own broth at home, one of the easiest ways to ensure you avoid cross contact is to have separate cooking tools used specifically for gluten free cooking. Using colored pots and spoons like these ones make it easy to avoid confusion.
