Is Cornstarch Gluten-Free?

Corn starch is made only with corn and is naturally gluten-free.

Gluten is a protein found in various different grains, including wheat, rye, barley, or oats if they weren’t grown separately from gluten-containing grains. You might see these ingredients on the ingredients list of the nutrient label instead of the word ‘gluten’ itself.

According to the FDA, a product can only be labeled as gluten-free in the United States if it contains less than 20 ppm of gluten, so you will want to watch for cross-contact during processing.

What Is Cornstarch Made Of?

Cornstarch is made from the endosperm of corn. The endosperm is the nutrient-rich tissue inside the grain.

Is Modified Cornstarch Gluten-Free?

Generally, modified corn starch is gluten-free.  However, you will want to check the ingredients on the label to make sure it does not declare containing wheat as an allergen

Can Someone With Celiac Disease Eat Cornstarch?

Yes, someone with celiac disease can eat cornstarch. But just to be safe, you will want to check for gluten-free certification or ensure it does not contain gluten on the packaging.

With more and more people being diagnosed with Celiac Disease it is important to know what cornstarch options are available and safe to use.

Can I Use Cornstarch Instead Of Flour For Gluten-Free?

You can use corn starch instead of flour, but I wouldn’t recommend it for baking except in small amounts in specific recipes like these lemon lime bars.

Instead, cornstarch usually works better to substitute flour when you want to thicken soup, pies, make gravy, or coat meats.

When substituting, you will want to use 1 tablespoon of cornstarch for every 2 tablespoons of flour.

Tips For Cooking With Cornstarch

When using cornstarch as a replacement when making gravy, you will want to use 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to make about 1.5-2 cups of gravy.

It’s also important to note to not add cornstarch directly to hot liquid as it will clump.  Instead, whisk it into cold water and add at the end of your cooking.

For sauces, when using cornstarch instead of flour you will use 1 tablespoon of cornstarch for every 2 tablespoons of flour. Before adding to the sauce, mix cornstarch with water then pour it into the sauce. Cook and stir over medium heat until it starts to bubble.

If you are using cornstarch to thicken a pie filling, you will want to add the cornstarch to the sugar and mix well before adding to the filling.

You may notice that reheating may not work as well had you used flour.
