What is Gin?

The main thing that separates one type of hard liquor from another is simply what it is made from. Gin is typically started from a mash of grains such as rye, barley, wheat or corn.

The other ingredient that has to be included in order for a particular liquor to be classified as gin is juniper berries. Other botanicals like coriander, lemon, cardamom, licorice among others can also be added by each distiller to make their specific gin unique.

Interestingly enough, gin is just vodka with flavor. The unique flavoring makes gin a preferred alcohol for mixed drinks because it helps to compliment the other flavors in the beverage.

Is Gin Gluten Free?

If you follow a gluten free diet, you probably want to know ‘is there gluten in gin’? Alcohol is a really interesting product when it comes to being gluten free.

Gluten is a protein that is found most commonly in wheat, rye and barley. Since we learned earlier that most gin is made from gluten containing grains, it would be easy to assume that by default alcohol would contain gluten.

Believe it or not, pure gin is actually gluten free. I know, how is that even possible, right?!

Hard liquors like gin are created using a 2-part process. The first step is fermentation and the second is distillation. The distilling process actually separates the alcohol from other parts of the fermented liquid.

This separation process actually removes the gluten from the alcohol, which means that as long as nothing is added back into the liquor after it has been distilled, it is gluten free. Learn more about gluten and alcohol in this guide.

Where you have to watch most carefully is in flavored gins and pre-mixed gin drinks. They can often have ingredients added in after distillation which can add gluten back into the drink.

Can you drink Gin with Celiac?

Yes! It is safe to drink pure distilled gin if you have celiac disease. As long as the gin hasn’t had any gluten containing ingredients added back in after distillation, it is gluten free and safe to consume.

If you’re wondering ‘does gin have gluten’ you will want to be sure to check the label for any added ingredients, contact the manufacturer or look for gluten free labeling or certification.

Any gin that is pure is considered gluten free. Under the new TTB policy, a gluten free claim can be made for alcohol as long as the manufacturer is following good practices and preventing cross contact.

If you’re not familiar with the concept of cross contact, check out this post
