What are Naked Cookies?
Naked Cookie is a protein cookie created by Naked Nutrition. They're fresh baked using defatted almond flour (a gluten free flour option) and 10g of protein making them comparable to many protein bars--but they're a cookie.
The texture is comparable to a soft baked cookie, and the taste fits somewhere between a soft protein bar and a cookie.
In the next few sections I'll unpack the flavors and dig through the ingredients to unpack whether these flavors are healthy!
Naked Nutrition Cookie Flavors
Currently, Naked Cookie comes in 3 different flavors: Chocolate Chip, Sugar Cookie, and Oatmeal Raisin.
I tried oatmeal raisin.
Honestly, it was pretty good. Definitely preferable to most protein bar options out there (let's be real, we often eat bars for convenience, not taste). But these really are a snack option that's both pretty tasty and actually satisfies hunger.
I'm pretty excited to try the other flavors.
Have you tried chocolate chip or sugar cookie? If so, let me know in the comments what you thought!
Are Protein Cookies Healthy?
I'm a big advocate that, as long as it's gluten free, it can have a part in a healthy gluten-free diet.
That said, let's break down the macros and composition of this gluten free protein cookie.
Each protein cookie contains 190 calories which is about my personal calorie target for a snack. You may require more or less depending on your body type/activity level or size of your meals, but this is a good ballpark.
Let's break down the composition of protein, fat, and carb:
Protein
Each of these cookies contains 10g of protein. These 10g come from grass-fed whey protein.
Whey is a complete protein (meaning that it contains all nine essential amino acids). Whey is also utilized quickly by the muscles making it good for both muscle building and healing.
On average, adults should receive 10-35% of their daily calories from protein. In these cookies, protein makes up 21% of the calories, hitting right within that ballpark.
Carbohydrate
Depending on the flavor, each cookie contains between 26-28g of carbohydrates.
Based on recommendations, the average adult diet should contain between 55%-70% of carbohydrates. These cookies contain 55-59% carbohydrate which hits at the bottom end of the recommended range.
Additionally, the cookies only contain 1g of added sugar, using allulose and stevia extract. Allulose is a sweetener made from dried fruit, maple syrup, or molasses, while stevia comes from the stevia plant. These are good natural sweetener options.
Lastly, these cookies also contain 6g of dietary fiber. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, it's recommended that women consume 22-28g of fiber daily, while the goal for men is 31-34g per day. These 6 grams of dietary fiber are a good help to reach that goal.
Need other ways to reach that fiber goal? Check out my guide to gluten free fiber supplements here.
Fat
Depending on the flavor, these cookies contain 11-13g of fat, with 6-7g being saturated fat.
On average, it's recommended for adults to consume 20%-35% of their calories from fat, with less than 10% being from saturated fat.
In these cookies, fat makes up 52-62%, with saturated fat being 28-33% of the cookie (depending on the flavor). In my opinion, this is pretty high to claim it's a well balanced snack, but again, this is definitely not a deal breaker.
It's important to remember that the recommendations above for protein, carb and fat are guidelines for an average diet-- and how much fat/protein/carb you consume at each meal and snack will average over the course of a day. These guidelines will also vary depending on your personal nutrition goals and digestibility of foods.
